Laredo Offers Free Chair Fitness Classes for Seniors

Laredo, TX - March 16th, 2026 - The Laredo Public Health Department (LPHD) is demonstrating its commitment to community wellness by launching a series of free chair fitness classes throughout March. While the initial announcement focused on the classes held every Thursday at the MCL Clinic, 1404 N. Garcia St. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., this program is part of a wider, evolving strategy to address the increasing health and mobility needs of Laredo's growing senior population and individuals with physical limitations. Registration is currently being handled via telephone at (956) 261-WELL (9355).

Laredo, like many cities across the United States, is experiencing a demographic shift. The number of residents aged 65 and over is steadily increasing, bringing with it a greater demand for specialized health and wellness programs. According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau (available [ here ]), Webb County has seen a 15% increase in its 65+ population over the last decade. This trend underscores the crucial role of preventative healthcare and accessible fitness options for seniors.

Chair fitness, specifically, has emerged as a highly effective and safe method for maintaining physical health, even with limited mobility. Unlike traditional exercise classes, chair fitness minimizes strain on joints and reduces the risk of falls, making it ideal for seniors, individuals recovering from injuries, or those living with conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or heart disease. The exercises performed focus on range of motion, strength training, and cardiovascular health, all from the safety and comfort of a chair.

The LPHD's initiative isn't simply about providing exercise; it's about fostering social engagement and combating social isolation - a significant contributor to declining health in older adults. The classes offer a valuable opportunity for participants to connect with their peers, build supportive relationships, and maintain a sense of community. "We recognize that health isn't just physical; it's also mental and social," explains Dr. Amelia Hernandez, Director of the Laredo Public Health Department. "These classes are designed to address all aspects of well-being."

Responding to the initial positive feedback regarding the March classes, the LPHD is already exploring options to expand the program. Plans are underway to add additional class times and locations throughout Laredo, including potentially partnering with local senior centers and community organizations. They are also investigating the possibility of offering virtual chair fitness classes to reach individuals who may have difficulty attending in-person sessions.

Furthermore, the department is considering incorporating educational components into the classes, covering topics such as nutrition, fall prevention, and chronic disease management. The goal is to empower participants with the knowledge and tools they need to take control of their health and live fulfilling, independent lives.

"We're not just teaching people how to exercise; we're equipping them with the skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle long-term," adds Maria Rodriguez, a certified fitness instructor leading the chair fitness sessions. "The exercises are adaptable to different fitness levels, ensuring everyone can participate and benefit."

The LPHD is also actively seeking volunteers to assist with the chair fitness program. Individuals interested in volunteering can contact the department's wellness division at the phone number provided. Support is needed to help with registration, setup, and providing assistance to participants during the classes.

The success of this initiative demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance of proactive healthcare for all age groups, but particularly for the elderly. The Laredo Public Health Department's commitment to providing accessible and inclusive wellness programs is a model for other communities seeking to improve the health and quality of life for their residents. Residents are encouraged to register for the current classes or stay tuned for announcements regarding future expansions of the program.
