In a proclamation published Wednesday, President Trump sharply limited the ability of certain foreign nationals to travel to the U.S. from 19 countries, including Haiti, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela.

President Donald Trump announced new travel restrictions on 19 countries, citing national security concerns, in a proclamation on January 31, 2020. The restrictions, which were set to take effect on February 21, 2020, were aimed at countries that the administration believed did not meet U.S. security and information-sharing standards. The countries affected by the new restrictions were Belarus, Burma (Myanmar), Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Nigeria, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Venezuela, Yemen, Chad, Cuba, and Zimbabwe. The proclamation suspended the entry of certain immigrants and non-immigrants from these countries, with some exceptions, such as for those with valid visas or who were granted asylum. The announcement drew criticism from some who argued that the restrictions were discriminatory and would harm families and businesses.
