According to a report by The Washington Post, former President Donald Trump ordered the removal of safeguards from the federal procurement process in 2020, which led to the awarding of a $200 million contract to a company with ties to a senior White House official. The contract was for the production of medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the company in question, which had no prior experience in the field, was owned by a friend of the official. The decision to strip the safeguards, which were designed to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure fair competition, was made despite objections from career procurement officials. The contract was later canceled after the company failed to deliver the supplies, and the incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the federal procurement process under the Trump administration.
