NEWPORT, Ore. - March 10, 2026 - The coastal town of Newport, Oregon is preparing to host a gathering unlike any other next month: the inaugural Noodle Thinkers Convention. From April 27th to 29th, the Best Western Agate Beach Inn will transform into a hub for enthusiasts of 'noodling' - the increasingly popular, and often misunderstood, practice of catching catfish with bare hands.

While the term might conjure images of haphazard splashing and frantic grabs, noodling is far more nuanced than many assume. It's a traditional method of fishing, deeply rooted in the cultures of the Southern and Midwestern United States, where participants locate catfish nests (often hollow logs or submerged cavities) and carefully insert their hands to entice the fish into a grip. It requires a combination of skill, knowledge of catfish behavior, and a considerable amount of bravery.

The Noodle Thinkers Convention aims to move beyond the sensationalized media portrayals and provide a platform for education, responsible practice, and community building. Organizers, a collective of seasoned noodlers, emphasize that the sport is not simply about brute force, but about understanding the aquatic ecosystem and respecting the fish.

"There's a lot of misinformation out there," explains convention founder, Dale "Catfish" McMillan, a third-generation noodler from Oklahoma. "People see videos of us pulling big fish out of holes and assume it's reckless. But we're deeply connected to the rivers and lakes we fish in. We understand the breeding cycles, the fish habitats, and we practice catch-and-release whenever possible."

The convention's agenda is packed with workshops covering a wide range of topics. These include: 'Catfish Nest Identification,' led by aquatic biologist Dr. Emily Carter, who will discuss the importance of preserving these habitats; 'Safe Noodling Techniques,' a practical demonstration focused on minimizing risk to both angler and fish; 'Legal Regulations and Conservation,' addressing the varying state laws governing noodling and promoting sustainable fishing practices; and 'Noodling Etiquette,' a surprisingly vital session focused on river access, landowner permissions, and responsible behavior around other anglers.

The growing popularity of noodling can be attributed to several factors. In an age of increasingly disconnected lifestyles, many are drawn to the primal, hands-on experience it offers. It's a direct connection to nature, a return to a simpler way of fishing. Furthermore, the thrill of the catch - battling a large catfish one-on-one - is undeniably appealing. Social media has also played a significant role, with viral videos showcasing the unique spectacle of noodling attracting a new generation of potential enthusiasts.

However, this increased attention also brings increased responsibility. Concerns about safety and conservation are paramount. Noodling can be dangerous, with risks ranging from minor scrapes and bites to more serious injuries from snapping turtles, snapping fish, or submerged obstacles. Knowing how to properly assess a potential nest and avoid hazardous situations is crucial.

Beyond the practical skills, the convention also aims to foster a sense of community amongst noodlers. A dedicated 'Swap Meet' will allow attendees to trade gear, share stories, and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Evening events will feature live music, local cuisine, and a 'Noodling Tales' campfire session, where participants can recount their most memorable catches (and close calls!).

Organizers are hoping the convention will not only attract experienced noodlers but also introduce the sport to a wider audience, dispelling myths and promoting responsible participation. They envision the Noodle Thinkers Convention becoming an annual event, contributing to the economic vitality of Newport while celebrating a unique and challenging form of fishing. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed they will be present at the convention offering guidance on local regulations and encouraging responsible angling practices. They've also issued a statement noting that while noodling isn't traditionally practiced in Oregon waters, they are interested in monitoring the potential impact of its introduction and ensuring the health of native fish populations.
