SALEM, Ore. - February 25, 2026 - Today marks the deadline for Oregon families to verify their children's vaccination status to ensure continued access to school and childcare facilities. The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is strongly urging parents and guardians to take immediate action if they haven't already, emphasizing the critical role vaccinations play in safeguarding both individual health and the broader community.

The current requirements, stemming from years of established public health policy, necessitate that children attending schools, preschools, and licensed childcare centers be fully vaccinated against a range of preventable diseases. While exemptions exist - primarily medical and, in limited cases, religious - the OHA has been running a comprehensive awareness campaign for months, aiming to maximize compliance and minimize disruption for families and educational institutions.

Why the Focus on Immunization?

The push for widespread vaccination isn't merely a bureaucratic exercise. It's rooted in decades of scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, and varicella (chickenpox) were once common childhood ailments, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Widespread vaccination programs have dramatically reduced the incidence of these diseases, in some cases virtually eradicating them.

However, public health officials have noted a concerning trend in recent years: a slight decrease in vaccination rates nationally, and in some Oregon counties. This decline, fueled by misinformation and vaccine hesitancy, has led to localized outbreaks of preventable diseases, highlighting the fragility of herd immunity. Herd immunity occurs when a sufficiently high percentage of the population is immune to a disease, making it difficult for the disease to spread and protecting those who cannot be vaccinated (such as infants too young to receive certain vaccines or individuals with specific medical conditions).

What Happens if a Child is Not Vaccinated?

Children who are not up-to-date on their vaccinations, and do not qualify for an exemption, risk exclusion from school or childcare. School administrators and childcare providers are legally obligated to enforce the immunization requirements and may send students home until proof of vaccination is provided. This can lead to significant disruption for families, as well as potential learning loss for the child.

"We understand that schedules are busy, and navigating healthcare can be challenging," says Dr. Emily Carter, State Health Officer for Oregon. "But protecting our children's health is paramount. We've worked to make accessing vaccination services as easy as possible, and we encourage all parents to reach out to their healthcare providers or utilize the resources available on the OHA website."

Accessing Vaccination Services & Resources

Oregon offers several avenues for families to ensure their children are vaccinated. Pediatricians and family physicians are the primary providers of childhood immunizations. The OHA website ([ https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ph/immunization/pages/index.aspx ]) provides a comprehensive list of immunization requirements, frequently asked questions, and a search tool to locate vaccination clinics throughout the state. Many pharmacies also offer vaccinations for children of certain ages. Furthermore, the OHA's Healthy Start program provides free or low-cost vaccinations for eligible children.

Looking Ahead: Oregon's Commitment to Public Health

The February 25th deadline is just one component of Oregon's ongoing commitment to public health and disease prevention. The OHA is actively monitoring vaccination rates and disease trends, and will continue to adapt its strategies to address emerging challenges. Future initiatives may include enhanced outreach to underserved communities, increased funding for vaccination programs, and continued efforts to combat misinformation and promote vaccine confidence. The current focus extends beyond childhood vaccinations as well, with ongoing campaigns encouraging adult boosters and flu vaccinations to further strengthen community immunity. The state is also actively involved in federal partnerships to prepare for and respond to potential future pandemics, recognizing the vital importance of a robust public health infrastructure.
