Now without that federal money at the start of the summer harvest season, farmers and food organizations are worried about how businesses will survive and how residents in need will access fresh food.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $9.3 million grant to a coalition of Massachusetts farmers and food organizations, including the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project and the Franklin County Community Development Corporation, to enhance local food systems. This funding, part of the federal government's initiative to strengthen food supply chains, will support projects aimed at increasing the production and distribution of locally grown food, improving food access in underserved communities, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices. The grant is expected to benefit small and mid-sized farms by providing them with resources to expand their operations and reach new markets, ultimately contributing to the resilience and equity of the regional food system.
