UW-Parkside Launches Women's Flag Football Program

KENOSHA, Wis. - In a landmark moment for women's collegiate athletics and the burgeoning sport of flag football, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (UW-Parkside) has announced it will officially launch a women's flag football varsity program, beginning in the fall of 2026. This bold move marks UW-Parkside as the first NCAA Division II institution in Wisconsin to embrace the sport, signaling a significant step in its national recognition and growth.

The announcement, released on Sunday, January 11th, 2026, has been met with enthusiasm from both the university's athletic department and the wider flag football community. Director of Athletics Kris Daudt expressed the department's excitement, stating, "We are thrilled to add women's flag football to our athletic program. This sport's popularity continues to grow nationwide and we are excited to provide this opportunity for our female student-athletes." The decision reflects a wider trend of universities recognizing the potential and appeal of flag football, particularly as it gains formal recognition and structure within the collegiate athletic landscape.

Flag Football's Rise to Collegiate Prominence

Flag football, a dynamic and increasingly popular variation of American football, has been rapidly gaining traction across the United States. Its accessibility, reduced risk of injury compared to traditional tackle football, and emphasis on skill and strategy have contributed to its broad appeal. The sport's ascent has not gone unnoticed by the NCAA, which recently sanctioned flag football, a crucial step towards its integration into the collegiate athletic system. This sanctioning paves the way for scholarships, standardized rules, and increased media coverage, further accelerating the sport's growth.

UW-Parkside's commitment to establishing a varsity program places them among a growing but still relatively small group of institutions. Currently, just 15 other NCAA schools are offering women's flag football at the varsity level, showcasing UW-Parkside's position as a trailblazer in the state of Wisconsin. The university's decision highlights a strategic approach to expanding athletic opportunities for women and capitalizing on the sport's rising popularity.

Building a Competitive Program & Positive Experience

The newly appointed Head Coach, Josh Kelling, shares the university's vision for the program. His focus isn't solely on building a winning team, but on fostering a positive and enriching experience for the student-athletes involved. "Our goal is to build a winning program while providing a positive experience for our student-athletes," Kelling stated. This emphasis on holistic athlete development, encompassing athletic skill, academic achievement, and personal growth, is a hallmark of successful collegiate athletic programs.

Looking Ahead: Recruitment, Infrastructure, and the Future of Flag Football in Wisconsin

With the program launch still over a year away, UW-Parkside is focused on laying the groundwork for a successful debut in the fall of 2026. This includes actively recruiting talented female athletes, developing the necessary athletic infrastructure to support the team, and building a strong coaching staff. The university is expected to face the challenge of cultivating interest and participation from students unfamiliar with the sport, which will involve outreach programs and demonstrations to showcase the excitement and accessibility of flag football.

The addition of women's flag football isn't just significant for UW-Parkside; it represents a potential catalyst for the sport's growth throughout the state of Wisconsin. Other universities may now be more inclined to consider adding flag football to their athletic offerings, potentially creating a regional collegiate flag football league in the future. The university's initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to collegiate athletics, embracing emerging sports and providing new opportunities for female student-athletes while contributing to the broader development of flag football as a recognized and respected varsity sport.
